On Sunday 23 March on a cold, wet and windy morning, John Gamon, Peter Procter and Geoff Darby rose from their beds and travelled to Northamptonshire to represent the CFT&FF Club.

The wind was to be the main factor in the day’s event as a strong north westerly blew over the right shoulder when fishing the bank that seemed to be holding most of the fish.

Peter who fishes left handed was getting a good line out but John and Geoff struggled in the wind. Geoff, however, caught first and landed a nice 3lb 15oz rainbow. By lunch Peter had 3 fish and Geoff 2 whilst John who had opted to fish the far bank had blanked. A tactical discussion then followed: ‘should I eat my pastie or hot cross bun first!’

After lunch John joined Peter and Geoff on the ‘hot bank’. A frustrating afternoon followed. When the wind dropped, which it did three times, John got a line out and caught a fish on each occasion! Peter caught a further 4 for a total of 7 but somehow managed to loose a further 7 at the net! Geoff fished only flies that he had tied himself for the first time! One of them being the blood worm that Caroline tied. Chris Reeves caught 3 in 10 minutes on the same fly!

We finished at 04:00 pm and after the weigh in gathered at the Fox at Thorpe Waterville for a light meal and prize presentation. We finished fifth overall but had a thoroughly enjoyable day and made new friends over a pint.
